View 7 Otenma-cho Cotton-goods Lane

Two geisha women in matched ensemble are walking on a street, with an accompanying girl just behind them.

This is the main street of Otenma-cho.
Though it's just a few blocks from the gloomy Tenma-cho prison (my previous post), it was a big shopping street.

It's evening.
Some say the geisha are going for their work.
Some say they are going home from their work.
Anyway, the street looks quiet.
But during the day, the street was very busy, like this.
Toto Tenmacho Han-ei no zu (Prosperous Tenmacho) by Hiroshige a set of three

I like the way these shops look.
Their white crest design against blue look sophisticated.

Look at the View 7 again.
Many of the shops in this area were dealing with cotton goods, thus, the title of this print.
Here, we can see three different shops, which we can tell from their names and crests; Tabataya, Masuya, and Shimaya.

Today, it is no longer a shopping street.
But the street itself is still there.
Otenma Honcho Dori Street

a lot of office buildings

I looked for some trace of old Edo.
And this shop Edo-ya certainly is the one.
Brush shop, Edoya, established in 1718
I could see all kinds of brushes inside, but I was too shy to enter the shop.

Also, Washi (Japanese paper) shop "Ozu Washi," established in 1653, has been in business at the same place for 360 years .

Ozu Washi Building

Unfortunately, they are under some renovation right now.
But their crest was on the wall.

They have their temporary shop on the second floor.
They also have a small museum, too.
I was surprised to learn that Motoori Norinaga, a famous scholar in Edo, is from this family.

If you are interested in Washi paper, this is the shop to go.
I didn't take any picture inside, but they have all kinds of beautiful, colorful, interesting paper with so much different texture.

使い道もないまま一枚だけ購入 the one I bought was rather simple
It's so soft.

I also bought these.

Washi is very strong.  It makes interesting, soft edge when torn.
名刺用 for business cards

I'm going to make my name cards, umeshu labels, and, I'll see what else I can do with them. (^^)

It was fun shopping there.
Now, let's go back to where Hiroshige stood and see how it looks now.
From what I've read, I know Hiroshige is looking east.

Wow, I got the Sky Tree!
\(^o^)/
