My favorite potteries

first posted August 20

These days, it was so hot and humid around Tokyo that I didn't feel like walking around.
Today,it's much better, but too bad, it's raining.

So, today, I had fun taking pictures of my favorite potteries.
Let me introduce them.

In Japan, we have many styles of pottery, and they are often associated with the area.

Which style do you like?

This is a plate of Kutani-yaki, from Ishikawa Prefecture.
The fine painting with five-color glazes, red, blue, yellow, purple and green is its characteristic .
I have this on my Tokono-ma (alcove in a Japanese room) as a decoration.

This is Bizen-yaki, from Okayama Prefecture.
It is an unglazed stoneware.
I drink Sake with it. Umm, I love it!

This is Hagi-yaki, from Yamaguchi Prefecure.
It is a glazed, high-fired stoneware.
It has tiny cracks and changes its color with time.

My favorite is Tobe-yaki from Ehime prefecuture, which is where I'm from.
I'm afraid Tobe-yaki is not so well-known, but it has a long history of 230 years.
It's a white, thick porcelain ware with handpainted indigo designs.
It's sturdy, and dish-washer safe, so it's good for every day use.

It goes well with anything; tonkatsu, pasta, even with breakfast.

There aren't so many shops that sell Tobe-yaki in the Tokyo area.
I buy it when I go back to Ehime. I have also bought it on the internet site above.
But sorry, it's only in Japanese.
It has many good pictures though.
