Shitaya Hirokoji

first posted August 27

This is near Ueno.
Hirokoji means a very wide street.
Fire was a big problem for the Edo goverment. It spread out so easily.
In order to prevent that, they made big open areas.
Shitaya Hirokoji was one of them.

The store on the right is a big Kimono shop at that time.
If you are living in Japan, you might recognize the logo.
Yes, it's Matsuzakaya Department store, which is still in business at the same spot!

A man named Ito Ranmaru Sukemichi was a Samurai for Nobunaga Oda.
After Nobunaga's death, he opened "Ito Kimono Shop" in Nagoya.
That's the very beginning of this department store, and it was in 1611.
So, this year, they are celebrating their 400th anniversary.
Way to go, Matsuzakaya!

In 1768, Ito Kimono Shop expanded its business into Edo.
It purchased the Kimono shop Matsuzakaya in Ueno, and took the name, too.
Ever since then, Matsuzakaya enjoyed its prosperity, as one of the biggest shops in Edo.

Now, let's see, how does it look now?

Of course, it has changed so much.
But there are things that didn't change; Matsuzakaya, the distant trees of Ueno and the busy street.
